I'm excited to be releasing my latest song, Darn Tough Vermont (Brave Little State), featuring wonderful narration by Gov. Jim Douglas (2003-2011). I wrote it just after the catastrophic flooding across much of Vermont last July. While crafting this song, the devastating Flood of 1927 came to mind and the powerful words of Calvin Coolidge found their way into the lyrics. Gov. Douglas serves as Vice Chair of the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation and is a devotee of our 30th president (who was born on July 4th. 1872 in Plymouth Notch, Vermont). He graciously made an extra effort to come over to Danville's Roadside Recording Studio (Ryan Dauphin, Prop) to lend his voice to the “Coolidge” sections of the song.

About

Dwight Lakey, Songwriter

Bio

ASCAP Songwriter Dwight Lakey was born and raised on the eastern plains of Colorado and transplanted to the Green Mountains of Vermont as a young man in the late seventies.  A career as a practicing CPA and full-time fatherhood put his music on the back burner.  However, entering middle-older age, the dam broke and a string of lyrically-driven songs came streaming out. His songs reflect his Western prairie past combined with wry wit absorbed from the stories of numerous Vermont north-country philosophers over the past 45-years.

Musical Influences Influenced by an eclectic mix of old-time gospel, folk, rock and country, Dwight sang in the choir and played in the band.  His diverse musical background is underscored by the fact that he was a member of the Christian traveling group, The Angelaires+2, AND a member of a garage band named Style 69!

Discography Dwight’s maiden album, Rocky Mountain Oysters and Other Tasty Morsels (2009), contains the following tunes: Rocky Mountain Oysters, Artificial Tears, Legal Mumbo Jumbo, You Never Gave Me Your Heart, Half-Way Done Two-Thirds to Go, Common Head Cold Blues, Prairie Solitude, Ballyneal (A Western Reel), All Ameri-Can, and Bon Voyage.

Dwight’s second album, Rough but Ready and Other Unpolished Gems, contains the following tunes: Rough but Ready, Buck the System, Cash is a Cruel King, Ain’t Gonna Be Your Yes Man No More, This Bum’s Dream, Café Cowboy, Booze Cruize, Max’s Save-O-Mat, Our Family Tree, and I Grew Up in the Armpit of Nebraska.

Dwight’s next album, Rainbows in the Spring and Other Signs of Hope, will contain the following tunes: Rainbows in the Spring, Last Chance Colorado, Darn Tough Vermont, Momma Bakes a Cake, Johnny O, Broken Branch, Dirt Dance, Serenity Now-Solo Version, Serenity Now-Choral Version, and An Opposable Thumb.
